Pension lump sum from EU

I worked for a Irish airline in the UK. The pension is paid monthly into my bank account from Ireland.
I recieved a lump sum when the pension was due to start and when they paid the amount (25%) into my bank account there was no mention of it being, or not being, tax free. I just presumed it would be. I'm now starting to worry. The only thing they said that it was down to me to notify my tax office.

My question is , do you think it is a tax free sum, the same as a UK pension?

In saying it was down to you, they left it to you to tell HMRC. I'm not aware of how UK tax law treats such Irish lump sums. The UK-Ireland tax treaty may give clue or you could ask HMRC and be prepared to be honest and pay any tax due on it.
