False Promises

Hey guys,

I have been at my current place of employment for close to a year now and recently they advertised a role for another team. This team offered more pay, better benefits and progression routes.

I had the interview, was offered the job and haven’t heard any more for 2 months. They keep promising different start dates, the new one being 2nd January, however when I chase for a contract they avoid providing me with one apparently because “it means I can’t start any sooner” if they need me. I believe they will only extend this again in the New Year.

Is there anything I can do about this? Other than find a new job? I love my work place and who I work with, but I also do not want to be lied to by my managers.

Any advise is welcome!

Simple answer - there is nothing you can do to force them to confirm you have the job. They do seem to be stringing you along, although it may be a case that the start date has been delayed, or there are now doubts about whether or not that job will be filled at all.
Years ago I was in a similar, but not identical, situation. I had applied for a job with a new employer and was told at interview that the job was mine and I would have confirmation in the mail (pre e-mail days) within a few days. The days turned to weeks, and I was unable to contact the person I had been interviewed by. Every time I tried, I was told they were busy/out of the office. I eventually discovered from somebody who worked for the company that it had been filled internally.
I suspect that in both situations the person saying "the job is yours" have been working beyond their authority rather than intentionally lying. Both have a similar character trait in being gutless and lacking the courage to be honest about the current situation.

How can you be sure you are being lied to ?

Could be extenuating circumstances where the start date is being changed.
  • I do not have proof I am being lied to, but I feel the manager who promised me this role is constantly avoiding any questions I have and instead compliments me, or offers alternative work for the day, and it feels almost like I am being brought up to be let down.

The position hasn’t been filled and the team have expressed their excitement for me to join but also have doubts it will be as soon as the manager has told me.

I do not mind waiting - but I would have appreciated being told this when I applied/was offered/accepted the job.

It could be I have no leg to stand on and I will have to hold out until I know for sure. I was just wondering if there was any advice, or law in place, regarding this situation.

    Thank you though
  • Thank you! It’s really disheartening, but I think I will just have to wait it out and think about my job within this company further if it goes on for a few more months.

Whether you wait or not is up to you.

Have a chat with your manager and just ask if theres any news, sit them down and ask them.
  • I have tried and it often results in attempts at boosting my ego (endless compliments about different things) and avoiding my questions.

Although I applied, I was approached with the job initially and told it would be fast tracked through to ensure I get the position. This was all true until it came to a start date.

Was anyone else interviewed? Just wondering if the "fast tracked through to get the position" has become a cropper if someone somewhere is concerned about an unfair recruitment process.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
  • This is the problem with internal moves. They are generally strung out as long as it can be because you aren’t leaving the business but it could take two department/section managers to agree.

There too perhaps your employer generally wants to get the year over and done with before announcing changes in and for 2020. No matter how ‘stable’ a company may be right now.
  • One person was interviewed and declined the position, as it was advertised so they had to offer an interview to internal applicants. It was taken off our internal recruitment website the day after my interview.

My current manager seems to be incredibly supportive. Even though she will be losing her senior and product expert - she has expressed her excitement for my progression within the company. Of course, this excitement is at face value and behind the scenes it may be a different situation.
