DWP chasing me for a debt I do not recognise

Options
Hi there I just received this letter through the post saying I owe DWP £1220 which I have no clue about. Im currently on hold to speak with them but still cant get through after 40 minutes on hold.

Will something like this have an adverse effect on my credit file?

    1. [STRIKE]Get off the phone!!!
    2. Send the DCA a 'proveit' letter[/STRIKE].

Edit: Forget that. Just realised this is the DWP. Wait for someone else to comment. Someone with a bit more knowledge....

Edit #2: Actually, whether it is DWP or not, you should dispute it in writing, if you believe it is wrong.

Do you know the period of time it relates to? Were you claiming benefits at that time?

They said over the phone it was for unpaid UC advances over the last 3 years. Im not sure how I go about checking if its legitimate or not?

Tell them you need a written breakdown as to how they reached the sum owed.
Otherwise you won't know whether to dispute the amount or not.

Did you have any UC advances during the relevant period and do you recall the repayment plan and what was agreed?
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

    Hi Elsien,

They gave me 5 amounts plus the dates which have totalled the amount being chased but they said they werent able to offer more information. Where would I go from here?

I think you should write to them. They need to give you more information than that.
