HATE my new job and going back to my old dead end job

Haven't given it much of a chance, have you? If you start off with the wholly unrealistic stance that it is your 'dream job' you need to work at making it precisely that. You also need to be clear in your own mind what constitutes your 'dream job' (as opposed to a daily nightmare).

I guess that is why it's important for us to take each opportunity to try something different. I now know what parts of that job I liked and didn't like and what I will be looking out for and avoiding in the future. I have already learnt that being a manager in that sector probably isn't for me and that it is probably time to follow the route of my degree. And my dreams will always be a little unrealistic, that's what makes them so great.

How is taking yourself out of a situation which makes you miserable "failure"? It is not; it is self-preservation.

    I love this! Thank you

Sometimes a job just isn't a good fit, and you know it pretty much as soon as you start. As we all spend so much time at work, there's no point hanging around if it makes you that miserable, and you can find something else.

My only other thought is maybe your expectations were a bit too high. Very few jobs are "dream jobs", most jobs have good and bad sides.

Yes I think this is the main thing I am taking from this experience. Take the good and the bad... but not too much bad :)

milliehaha, you come across as someone who expresses themselves really well and who knows what he/she wants from a job. You were obviously valued in your last job if they can find you a post you can go back to; that is good.

It seems you have a great deal to offer the job marketplace so likely that you have options; are you sure you cannot do this? More to the point, are you sure you don't want to? If so, I strongly advise you to do what you seem to be doing and get out now, before this new place brings you down any further... But, if you are not sure you can't make this work, why not give it another go? What do you have to lose?

Going into a new situation with a load of people you don't know was always going to be difficult. Is this job one you want to do and are capable of doing to a high standard? If yes, why let the bar stewards grind you down? No-one will ever fight for you the way you will, right?

Your choice but don't prolong the agony if you know it is not going to work for you; equally, don't let a bunch of you-know-whats mess with your career: If you really are a good manager (a very rare species, in my experience) maybe you need to decide whether this team deserve you, or not. How about that?

Thank you so much for this Smodlet. What lovely words to read when you're feeling crappy about yourself. I have bartered with myself for a while now thinking 'no i should stay' and 'sod this my happiness is more important'. I guess the latter did end up being more important. I still believe i could have flourished in that role but not in the environment i was in. It wasn't a place where i could come out of my shell, show my true confidence and spend the time i wanted to on my staff. I understand i was only there for 5 weeks but I could just see that this was the foundation of what was going to come. Oh well, I am starting to see now that most people have been in a similar position and it seems like for them it got better or is getting better... hey how could it get any worse? :D

You know you should never say things like that, right? Talk about tempting fate!

Never mind that, you sound so much more positive to me in your recent posts; thank you for coming back. Far too often we never find out what happened, let alone whether our input was of any help.

You got this, milliehaha. So that was not a good fit; life's about learning, right? You sound as if you now have a much clearer idea of what you want so get on out there and find it; I know you can... And please come back again and tell us your news. It is the only satisfaction I find from posting on here, pretty much. Most of the time, you might as well be talking in a vacuum, IYSWIM.

Good luck and believe in you. ;)
