Why are flatbreads more expensive than pittas?

Dug out some flatbreads out of the freezer. They were yellow stickered. Sitting next to them is a pack of pittas, again with a yellow sticker. Noticed that the original price for pittas was 50p, wheras the flatbreads were 82p, almost two thirds more. This is Asda.

Any reason why?

Probably because they have different ingredients or they consider flatbreads a more premium item than a pitta if you know what I mean and they are different weights as coffeehound mentioned above.

Flatbreads :Fortified Wheat Flour [Wheat Flour, Calcium Carbonate, Iron, Niacin (B3), Thiamin (B1)], Water, Rapeseed Oil, Yeast, Spirit Vinegar, Raising Agents (Diphosphates, Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate, Calcium Phosphates), Salt, Preservative (Calcium Propionate), Emulsifier (Mono and Diacetyl Tartaric Acid Esters of Mono and Diglycerides of Fatty Acids), Low Fat Yogurt (from Milk), Flour Treatment Agent (Ascorbic Acid)

I make my own unleavened bread with store cupboard ingredients. Much cheaper, much nicer and you don’t need a chemistry degree to understand some of the ingredients :rotfl:

I would like to bust any myth that regular Asda prices are low. They have targeted deprived and cash populations, and are riding on the coat tails of that reputation. Aldi and Lidl are much better value.

  • Most people can make flatbreads themselves very easy.. pitta breads are harder so thus should be more expensive.

Could you give an example of a 'fancy' restaurant?

Pizza Express (I refer to the Woking branch, obvs).

But I take your point. Travel to east to Turkey and beyond and its everyday food, much like sliced bread is here.
