Where I live we only have 'Local Shops for Local People, there's nothing for you here!'
And I love it!
So much nicer than where we used to live.... 3 off licences, a bookies and 4 takeaways....grim, grim, grim!Needs must when the devil vomits in your kettle..........0 -
Lytham in Lancashire is a proper town. It has 2 greengrocers, a fresh fish and poultry shop, a butcher, (there were 2 but the 2nd is converting into a deli,) a watch shop, numerous pie and cake shops, gift shops, shoe shops, and because its a nice area you can get some lovely things in the charity shops. Various banks and the post office (which is busy, efficient and polite yet still has to struggle to stay since the Post Office seems determined to shut down all the small ones) Oh and a toy shop (thats mine by the way) Theres a small Woolies, a small Coop and a small Booths. (The council have allowed a larger one on the edge of town but even this isn't massive)
It is a different world and every so often the bigger stores try to nose their way in and we have to hope that the local councillors don't let them.
Its a shame that this sort of town is seen as a throwback to the past because its much nicer to shop in a place like this than to race round a supermarket to get your shopping over and done with.

My sister lives in Lytham and it's a lovely town. I'm always jealous of the proper shops she has there when I visit. I'd love to be able to get my fruit and veg from a real greengrocer where it's loose, not in those awful plastic bags, and they have a wonderful smell when you walk in. She has two children so possibly even goes into your shop!0 -
When I moved house-a place with "proper shops" was high on my wish list.
My home town had changed from a thriving high street to a large Tesco, estate agents and travelagents ghetto (Ironically not far from Adiscombe).
Here I have within 5 mins walk a station, bus garage, high street with 2 butchers, 2 green grocers, market twice a week, petshop, Somerfield, clothes shops, deli etc. If I want "big shops" it's 4 mins by train or 15 by bus to the nearest "big town". Thank goodness I moved !I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

We live in Blackpool & walk to Lytham - mainly for the fish shop, greengrocers & the real ale pubs (well a walk has to have a purpose!)
Its a nice place to get good food if you're a cook.cuddlymarm wrote: »a butcher, (there were 2 but the 2nd is converting into a deli,)
Whereabouts is that?cuddlymarm wrote: »its a nice area you can get some lovely things in the charity shops.
The Barnardos is often used in BBC wedding programmes0 -
I was thinking the other day just how lucky we are in our village - population about 3000.
We have a butcher, bakery (just opened a little café in there), pet shop, chemist, 2 late night convenience stores, 2 Indians, 2 Chinese, 1 pizza, laundrette, and, my favourite - a greengrocers has just opened up! :j :j
They always seem to be busy so I'm hoping they'll stay.New year, no debt! Debt free date - 02/01/07 :j :j :j0 -
Hi Floss
The butcher that is converting to a deli (according to the lady in the Coop ) is the one opposite the Coop on Clifton St. They're still going to do the nice pork pies but are stopping doing the fresh meat.
Another thing I like about small town is that people talk to each other, its rare that people haven't the time to chat.
