fixing flaky pu /bags/car/shoes

in the interests of sustainability i am trying to get a longer life out of my boots which are them pu coated things , the pu has started flaking off in areas, and i also have some handbags where the pc is starting to rub off, and as this problem extends to anything coated such as car seats, jackets, boots, shoes , bags, and in the interests of not throwing these things away, any help in

one- preventing the peeling/ flaking in the first place and
two- fixing the problem areas that have occured
will be beneficial to a lot of us who do not want to fill up landfill. anything tried, tested and recommended.

i have been looking at stuff like car vinyl protection, crafting glues, fabric glues, anything , does not need to be shoe related.
have seen leather repair kits but they seem to come with dyes which i do not need, i suppose just some sort of a flexible sealant, waterproof, clear, i have posted something similar in make do and mend so apologies, but no replies.

think outside of the box.
