Credit score before mortgage

Options
Hi, I am looking to buy house in the next year so have been Saving in my help to buy isa. I know that it’s important to have a good credit score, but I have never had a credit card. Is it recommended to get one purely to build up a good credit score or does it not matter if you don’t have a credit score at all? Thanks in advance

Your credit score as given by the credit reference agencies is of no importance full stop. Lenders look at your credit history not the number made up by the CRA.

No history does not equal good history. No history means you are an unknown quantity in terms of lending so it's good to build up some good history.

Your application is scored, but they do that internally using information from your credit report and the application, not the score the credit agency gives you.

A credit card can help, but it is not necessary. You may have a bank account account a mobile phone, sky/virgin etc that can all help your application.
