leaving store and product isn't complete

Options
Hi,

Just curious - what's the deal if you leave a store having purchased something, get home and discover parts are missing?

You have to spend your time/petrol and go back to the physical store? Why isn't the onus on the store to send you the missing part?

Cheers

  • It probably depends on the situation, the product and how quickly you want a resolution.

e.g. A screw missing from a piece of flat-pack furniture is probably easiest sent by post because otherwise you're looking at putting all the bits back in the box, returning it and collecting a new one.

A decent retailer will work with you to try and find a mutually agreeable resolution.
  • Yep, it's not a big deal, just an annoying one tbh. I don't have much free time atm and finally managed to get to B&Q to pick up a few things. Returning home I found there was a missing metal bracket for a lamp share, rendering it useless.

Even though they have a delivery system, even though I spent £200 in their shop, they want me to come back to the store to fix their mistake.

Where have you had to go back to collect missing parts? Were you refused when you asked parts to be sent to you?

TBH, I think most people would rather go back and pick up missing parts than wait for the store to faff around posting them. I know from experience at Ikea that they give you the choice, either go back and collect the missing part immediately either from their parts dept or from another box of the same product, or wait 7-10 days for them to arrive by post.

A repair or replacement, the retailer should cover any costs involved - even if thats petrol money to go to their store and collect it.

Even if you are rejecting the goods (for a refund), unless you have previously agreed to return rejected goods then your only obligation is to make them available for collection (at your convenience and the retailers expense).
