  • Sure and it's really good! Just throw in some thyme (or any spices and herbs you prefer), carrots, onion, celery and you'll be getting a wonderful homemade meal! :)

    Okie dokie....that's great thanks.

So basically just like cooking a whole chicken. Which again I have never done but I see loads of people do.

The reason I ask is my big oven has packed up and I won't be able to get it sorted in time for Christmas. I have just a small top oven. Fine for when it's just me but not much use when feeding the five thousand.....:rotfl:

I bought a small mini oven but tbh it's rather disappointing - I just can't get on with it. It's rather hit and miss, ok for a dire emergency.

So I'm thinking a small turkey to fit the slow cooker, a small piece gammon for a second slow cooker (can borrow one) and that will leave the small oven and mini oven for roasties, pigs in blankets etc.

    Thanks again.

If it fits, then great :)

I do a breast on Xmas Day in a 3.5l SC. If I had a bigger SC I'd do a crown, but a crown won't fit in my small SC.

Thanks for that. I have never thought of using it for the turkey although I cook gammon in it regularly! I like the idea of having the 'big' oven free on the day. I might even cook it on Christmas eve making it easy to slice and portion some for later...:T

If it will go in the slow cooker it will cook your turkey crown. Plus the root veg as well.

It can be done but I'm not that keen on chicken done in the SC. I find it goes too soft.

Any chance one of the family could cook the turkey for you and bring it round when they come?
  • New to slow cooking so need advice please. Does the turkey have to be covered completely with water and for how long would you cook it? Many thanks x

I cooked a turkey crown in the slow cooker in cider. It came out really well.
I just added some sprigs of thyme and shallots and cooked on low for 6 hours. I cooled it before slicing as it was very tender.

I dont think it needs any liquid as it can cook in it's own steam.
  • No, don't add any water, just a little cider (as above) or wine to cover the bottom.
I find that chicken done that way does actually brown the skin, although it doesn't crisp. A few bits of streaky bacon over it help as well. I personally wouldn't describe the meat as too soft (but that's personal preference).
The root veg will be soft (again, personal preference), the turkey good, and the juices will make a fantastic gravy.
    Good luck.
