One Off Gambling Transaction - Mortgage Problem?

Options
Hi

Just after some advice/reassurance. My partner and I (first time buyers) have today had a £200K offer accepted on a house. The house will be on my name only.

We're putting down a 10% deposit. I'm on a salary of £38K but only started my current job a month ago. We have an agreement in principle from Halifax and we're all set to press ahead.

The problem is I think I've made a monumental mistake. I came across a football bet today which I saw as an almost certain win (or as certain as you can be with gambling)... so I decided to put £200 down in two deposits of £100 each. It came in and I made a bit of money. As it happens, £400 has gone out of my account due to an error by the bookie but the extra £200 is being refunded.

I'm concerned now that this one off gambling transaction on my bank statement will spook the lender and will mean my mortgage application is rejected. I've never gambled more than a couple of quid on the odd sweepstake before. I don't know what possessed me but I'm completely stressing now and feel like such an idiot.

Am I right to be worried? Any comments would be appreciated.

Is the mortgage going to be in both of your names?
  • Hi, thanks for the reply. No, the plan is for it to be in my name only but I suppose that could change if it'll be better off in both names. My partner doesn't have a stable salary as she's a (reluctant!) supply teacher looking for full time work.

You refer to the deposit being joint. This will be an issue for a sole application.
  • Sorry, to clarify... when I say "we're" putting down a 10% deposit, I mean I am. The deposit money will all be coming from my account. The plan is effectively that my partner won't be involved at all in the deposit, mortgage or ownership.

I live at home currently and don't pay rent or bills so don't have any outgoings other than my mobile phones, etc. I have plenty of disposable income. On my current salary, I would comfortably save well over £1300.

I'm annoyed with myself for doing this even though I made money out of it but could my worry be misplaced? It was just a one off and there aren't any other gambling transactions on my statements.
  • Won't be an issue. Rarely a day goes past without seeing gambling on statements. Unless its clearly problem gambling it rarely gets mentioned by lenders
  • Thank you for the reassurance, JMA. Still feeling very uneasy about where I've found myself but I guess I deserve that for my utter stupidity.

Halifax don't ask for bank statements
