Conductor refused valid ticket

The plan did technically change, but as previously stated I did not have much choice in the matter because that is what National Rail Enquiries told me to do when I phoned them at Kings Cross. So I jumped on a bus to Liverpool Street, then onto a train to Norwich. I didn't have time to go to the ticket office, so I just jumped on and hoped to buy the excess onboard. I even asked the conductor and he said that my ticket was OK.0

OP why do you do it?0

You benefitted from a concession to travel via Norwich instead of via Cambridge due to disruption. That disruption was ended when you tried to re-use the ticket. The validity of the ticket had expired. The conductor was right to ask you to buy a new ticket from Wymondham to Thetford.
A year or so my daughter holding a ticket from Chelmsford to Manchester via Euston travelled from Kings Cross to Doncaster, and onwards to Manchester, because the West Coast Main Line was blocked somewhere. The ticket was accepted because of the disruption. But no way could she have come back that way when the disruption was ended.
Your concessionary use of a via Cambridge ticket to travel via Norwich because of disruption ended when the disruption ended.
In any case, if there had been no disruption and you had travelled London to Thetford via Cambridge, you wouldn't have been able to overnight in Wymondham and back track to Thetford the next day.
Whichever way you look at it, the conductor was right to expect you to buy a ticket.0 -
Because I wanted to avoid having to pay a First Class Return fare, and just buy a First Class Single for the journey back instead. Therefore saving me money.
In any event why would anyone delibrately travel without a ticket from a Paytrain station i.e. Wymondham station in this case, when they would expect their ticket to be checked on the train? Most fare dodgers are not so obvious! :mad:0
