in Cutting tax
Hello,
I am a young lad with 2 jobs and I’m just struggling to understand if I am paying too much tax on them because it seems like a lot.
This is how it is:
Job 1 - salary 16k, started in september - paid for 6 weeks end of October. Earnings £1869.48, tax BR: -373.80 NI: 138.06
So I rang up HMRC to change this, and they put me on 2 different tax codes
Job 1 - 16k - tax code 500LX
Job 2 - 7k - tax code 300TX
So I’ve had my first payslips from this change and these are the 2 payslips from both jobs:
Job 1 - after pension £1294 - tax (500L M1) -£175 - NI -£69
Job 2 - £482 - PAYE £50
Does this seem right to you and could someone point me in the right direction of if this sounds about right or should I call back and change the tax code for an overall for both jobs or leave it as it is?
Thank you

Your big problem isn't the codes it is the X on the end. Have you had any taxable earnings previous to these jobs as these codes seem to imply that you did.0

Yes, I had a previous job and left in august.0

What happened to the P45 from your previous job, how much did you earn in that one ? How long has job 2 been going, what tax code was previously on that ?0

I had a previous 1 month job for an agency in which I earnt £901 and before that I left a job in which I’d earnt £6.3k in this tax year, in this job I wasn’t even sent a p45 (was a builder and I was on the books)

Job 2 started in September, started on 0T in September, October payslip was 106T and now on 300TX in November payslip0

The tax on the 2 pay packets is about right, I make job 2 about £4 overtaxed, whether the tax codes are appropriate or not is another matter. The problem is your tax affairs are a bit of a muddle with a few different jobs. They obviously think you have underpaid some tax somewhere along the way hence the less than full tax allowance across the 2 jobs. You will likely have to wait until April to get it all sorted unless you have managed to keep all your old payslips for the year. Do you have a total of all the income you have had from all your jobs, up to and including this last pay, including any JSA if any and the total of all tax deducted ? Do you have an on line tax account which should show all the jobs with income and tax paid ? From experience when they are trying to sort this type of thing out they make a complete dogs dinner of it. Assume you are not in Scotland.0
