how do i find my relevant tax office

i have been told i can buy back 3 additional years to fill my hole in my state pension by the NI contribution office. in their communication it says: you need to have it certified by your tax office !? giving no address or contact. when i rung, nobody there knows which tax office i need to write to. i was a midwife and my tax office was in east kilbride ( i worked and live in scotland ) my letter to HMRC came back address unknown ( i got the address from the internet and it also appears on my last P60 )
when i follow HMRC guidelines on the internet, i end up in a loop. phone a 0300 no. when i phone, it it says go online !!?
maybe somebody knows a tel. no. where i can talk to an actual person, or better still knows what to do in my case.

Was it the number at the bottom of this page (0300 200 3500)?

If so I've successfully used it in the past to speak to a human who sorted out voluntary class 3 contributions for me, but it was about eighteen months ago....
  • thanks DOX, yes that was the address i used. strangely royal mail sent it back to me. i have it in front of me now saying " addressee gone away !??
could that be a mistake by the postman ?
  • thanks p00hsticks,
yes we phoned this no. on different days, the end result was always the same, being told to go onto the website. but you give us hope, since you actually got through. we shall try again for one last time.

Sounds like it - that's definitely where the tax office is in East Kilbride.

Don't they all now go to the same address? Then they get distributed elsewhere. Very surprised though that it got returned to sender.
  • i have simultaneously sent a letter to HMRC headquarters in edinburgh .
i haven't heard from them yet..... maybe this is a good sign.
i have now established that a postman has messed up the delivery of my letter to the legitimate HMRC address in east kilbride ( i kept the returned letter ). i assume other than a replacement stamp, i will get no apology from royal mail.

Are you sure you're in a loop and not in a queue? Whenever I've called they play music for a few seconds then interrupt it to say "Wouldn't you rather contact us online" or something similar and then play another few seconds of music. Repeat ad nauseam. It's very annoying but doesn't mean you won't eventually speak to a person, who is invariably helpful in my experience.
  • we managed to talk to a human via the 0300 tel. no, after all this time, it is all sorted.
    thanks to everyone who helped.
