Moving to SIM only

The remaining part of the mobile was what was owed on the phone not the contract. I can negotiate it as although it's my partner's phone it's in my name and she wouldn't pass the credit check at the time.

I tried negotiating but they said they couldn't match the deal. I went in there talking about 3 Mobiles £8 for 8gb deal. o2 said they couldn't match it.

I'll phone tonight anyway and see what they do. If they don't offer to match I'll be leaving.

They'll do little in store as a rule - they know full well that people won't hold their ground in person as well as they will on the phone so the strategy is all around trying to persuade you with shiny extras rather than to actually meet your real requirements.

Assuming that 3 have the coverage you want, and getting the phone unlocked won't cost much, then you have nothing to lose by ditching and switching.

Gave them a ring and got an 8gb a month deal for £10 a month. That's a good chunk saved and we got more data as well.

Rather chuffed with that. Thanks for all your help guys.

I have 3xO2 SIMs on £10-ish for 2GB data, SIM only, and wouldn't mind a little more data. Knowing the tariff exists is half the battle

I'm about to use the Plusnet 8gb for £10 a month deal as plugged in the weekly :money: email as a bargaining point with EE, if that helps! in my experience mobile providers are usually able to match most offers that are out there even if you end up on a non-standard plan.

Thanks EH - I've been stuck with O2 for a long time for a litany of reasons I won't pollute someone else's thread with, but have learned a little about how they work. If you happen to know the name of a "special tariff" - they all have names - then when you talk to the customer retention people you can propose that as a deal you'd be prepared to accept, and get it processed immediately. Otherwise you've got to go through all the intermediate offers first. Life's too short.

I've just checked on my app and it says O2 Sim Only Unlimited 18M 8GB. I phoned them and said that GiffGaff are offering 6gb for £10 what can you do. He offered the 8gb for £10.

One thing to watch with the big boy's price matches is they often give you a £ discount off a normal tariff so, say, £15 less £10 discount = £5. When the annual price increase comes around the, say, 4% increase goes on the headline price so £15 + 60p less £10 = £5.60, a 12% increase in what you pay. Still likely a saving but just be aware the increase is not on what you pay, MrsM's "£4.99" tariff is now £6.01 after 2 increases.
