Meta (Facebook) are commissioning 7.5GW of gas generaiton to power a data centre complex in the US. I am yet to be convinced there is not an order of magnitude error somewhere in the numbers: 7.5gw running full time would power 85% of all UK homes?!

The numbers seem to be correct.
Eg. here's a press release (linked from the electrek article) from Energy, a US utilitity company, saying Meta has contracted with them to build "seven new natural gas-fueled combined-cycle power plants totaling more than 5,200 megawatts" to supply Meta's 5GW datacentre development.
AI datacentre are immense consumers of electricity.
