BPSS check & driving offences

Hello all
I've recently been offered a new job which needs a bpss check (hence new account, don't want to associate it with any of my old posts).
I'd never heard of a BPSS check but this job is working for a government contractor. I've got no criminal convictions and have a clean enhanced DBS, but the BPSS check is asking for all offences including driving offences and on the spot fines.
I have a conviction for driving without 3rd party insurance from about 6 years ago (due to a genuine oversight when I thought I was insured on my husband's car but his insurance had lapsed while he was abroad)
I also have two fixed penalties from about 2 years ago, when I drove in a bus lane by mistake, the police pulled me over and realised that my car was also not taxed (again, a genuine oversight).
I have declared this on my form, but could this mean that my job offer gets pulled? I am let to believe that the BPSS check is about whether you are a security risk. I'm just really worried that this will mean that I don't have a job to go to (and I've quit my old one now)

I'm sure you have already registered that quitting one job before you have an unconditional offer from the new one is going to give you a most unwelcome period of uncertainty...

You seem to be a bit prone to 'oversights', but that's hardly likely to get your job offer withdrawn, given what the BPSS check is for (google and read about it if you've not done so already).
  • Well the first one, my husband had just left for Afghanistan, so I was a bit all over the shop.
The second one was the first car I'd ever bought (as opposed to having been given by family) so assumed the man selling the car knew what he was doing as it was a garage. And the police that pulled me over agreed it was confusing as a) taxis in that city look like ordinary saloon cars, and b) the signage and road layout is not great. But thanks for the judgment.
I intended to quit my formerly extremely stressful job to give myself a break before looking for a new one that I would enjoy more, and this particular job popped up and was ideal.

You say you have no convictions, but actually you do, don’t you!

At least you passed the first test of declaring them all - they would almost certainly refuse clearance if you try and hide it, as they will see it on the PNC anyway if they choose to look.

Each case is looked at on its own merits and there is no blanket rule, however BPSS is the lowest level of check and isn’t really considered to be a security clearance. In fact, are you sure it was BPSS? I have that and I was never asked to declare criminal convictions but I was for higher level security clearance.
  • I don't think anyone can tell you because we don't really know how the employer will consider these oversights. They may be fine about it. They may consider that you play a bit too fast and lose with the law and that isn't to their liking. All you can do is explain and hope for the best.
