Widening Access Training Schemes (WAT)

I have just recently realised that I have missed the 1st September deadline for applications for claiming back NI & tax related to WATS. Is there any other way of claiming back?

  • Looks like I have missed the deadline as well..??

Did I miss some official notification on this whole thing, or were we expected to find it by chance on social media / MSE ?

I have worked in the NHS non stop since training in the 2001/2003 and cannot recall this subject ever being brought to my attention via HMRC or NHS Trust /Payroll .. :(

If I missed the memo .. my bad, but if it was only available to those who stumbled over it that doesn't sit well..

If it makes you feel any better, simply being in the NHS in training didn't entitle you to it. From what I remember, it came down to whether you were considered an employee or not by the terms of your contract (aka whether you were receiving remuneration in exchange for employment duties or for learning - of which working happened to be a part of).

It also usually needed the employer to agree (that it met the rules).

  • Anybody got any information or updates regarding WATs schemes. I initially applied to my NHS payroll provider in November 2018, due to their errors, it was re-submitted in July 2018. I have been told I'm owed a refund by my Payroll, but nobody seems aware of who has to pay me (payroll or HMRC). I have spent hours on the phone to HMRC, most of the staff are not aware of WATS schemes.
  • Sorry, re-submitted July 2019
