A Qu. about Council Tax and Water Bills.

Options
Evening all,

I often see people recommended to ask about paying their council tax and water rates over 12 months instead of the 10/8 months that seems to be standard and I was wondering if anyone was actually doing this? Because my council and water authority both told me a big fat "no" when I asked about this, which I thought was really unfiar. They both gave similar reasons - it's the computer system (??), it's the way "it's done", it's not up for negotiation etc......

So, if anyone has been successful in their request would they mind telling me which council and water company they're with so I could go back to mine and say "well, XXXX allow people to do it, why not you?" ;)

Many thanks,
Scarlett xx :)

I pay over £12 months with a £5 discount for direct debit. I live on Merseyside, so North West Water.
  • Hi Scarlett, I pay mine over 12 months with Midlothian Council. Prior to living here, I paid over 12 months with the City of Edinburgh Council. Both paid by direct debit. Not sure if that make a difference?
  • PS In Scotland, the water rates are included in the Council Tax and I dont get a discount for paying by DD.

  • Hi Scarlett,

I pay my council tax to Boston County Council in Lincolnshire and when I started paying by dd they gave me the option to pay by 10 months or 12.

Thats a bit crap how your council wont let you pay over 12

  • Yorkshire Water, and Bradford Council both allow to pay over 12 months. I didn't even have to ask, it was just one of the options they offered along with 8 months and paying it upfront *laughs hysterically*

Warrington Borough Council used to have several options, lumps sum, 2 halves, 10m & 12m.

United Utilities accept weekly & monthly payments - can pay cash at PO if it works with your budget, as do British Gas & Manweb. They don't advertise this though!
  • Thanks all :)

I don't actually mind paying them by DD, but it would be so much easier to pay them both over 12 months because 1. the monthly bills would be lower and 2. it would make budgeting so much easier - none of this 2/4 months off nonsense that just confuses me!!

Bringmeshoes - severn trent make us pay over 8 months! It's £40 a month.
