Flexible working opportunities

My wife is currently on maternity leave and is due to go back to work in about 6 months. The problem is that her current work is a bit of a commute and doesn't offer the flexibility she needs.

Ideally she'd work roughly 15 hours a week, and like to do 3-5 hour shifts, with some of those in the evening, preferably with the option of changing shift at short notice. I know that's very wishful thinking, and we'll likely need to compromise, but does any know of a job that might fit this description?

The majority of her previous jobs have been admin based, but she's open to most things except nursing/social care.

She knows someone who does bank work at the hospital which would be ideal, so she's keeping a look out there.

Even the most flexible of work places won't be able to cope with last minute shift changes like that. Bank work, where you do pick and choose what you do, won't continue to employ you if you are continually dropping out of shifts you have elected to do.

I think the key word in what youve put is compromise.

Shed get a job in social work offering exactly what she wants apart from not working in social work in a few days at most. Theyre typically zero hour contracts which tend to work very well with new mums/parents.

What would the reasoning for last minute changes be? just in case we can think of a work-round, as I'm guessing that would be the clincher.

My DD worked in retail for a big shoe shop and we are near the MetroCentre so could have hours from 9am to 10pm some months. It was ideal, the rota went up and then the staff could swap and change their shifts as they liked, even on the day in question. As long as they all did their contract hours it was ok.

This was great during uni holidays as she picke dup loads, then when workload got too much she gave some shifts away.

    Would retail be an option?
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....
  • Being the need for high flexibility, I would try working for myself first. Copywriting? Millions of websites out there that want content. Websites like PPH are a good link to finding already established writers and customers. I would try working with someone before trying to build myself, just a thought.

It wouldn't be literally last minute. I guess what I mean is that she'd wouldn't want to commit upfront to working several weeks in advance that she couldn't change if the kids got ill, or I had to work overtime for example. This is probably the least important criteria.

Yes I'd think so, but can't think of any retail places around here that are open much after 6, the larger supermarkets excluded - which is an option.

That sounds great. We'd though about proof-reading, but not sure if that was a viable option. Will look into copywriting. Publishing is actually an area that interests her, more so from a design/layout/typography perspective, but that could be a way into a potential new career which would be an added bonus.

    Hello,

My request has been rejected, details on another post.

They have allowed me 5 days to appeal in writing.

I dont feel like its enough time, is it reasonable to ask for extra time and does employer have to give me more time.

i dont want to ask, and waste time waiting for response

As you aren't currently at work, 5 days to formulate and submit an appeal seems perfectly reasonable.
