In my despair yesterday it was impossible to believe in any positives on the political road our country is now committed to.

I wrote that one personal effect of the election result will be that I must curtail the help offered to those less fortunate. Now I see that it's more important than ever to make my money stretch as far as possible, in order to continue to support others where I can.

The previous despondent comment has been edited.

No wonder you were cross about the bank accusing you of fraud

I think you must start looking after yourself now, I know you like to help others out but it's time to put yourself first xx

Well, there was good justification for checking that particular transaction as it was a five figure sum and my age puts me at higher risk of being scammed than average. What infuriated me was the threat to summarily block all my accounts - which would have left me unable to buy food or access cash for daily expenses.

Bless you Sun.A, I know you mean well, but I cannot in all conscience subscribe to the "I'm alright, Jack!" school of thought. Today more than ever, we need to care for each other in order to promote a healthy society.

Politics has taken up far too much of my energy recently but there is one more message I would like to share with everyone, especially those who are happy with the election result. I don't know who wrote it, but it speaks for all of us who were dismayed at the direction our country is now taking. We need to make this work, together, but obviously led by those whose vision it is:

"So congratulations if you wanted Boris Johnson as PM. Please don’t celebrate too much, though - you have work to do.

You see, us Remainers have spent three and a half years now telling you Brexit was wrong but we’ve finally and completely lost. There’s pretty much nothing we can do now to stop it. So, it’s over to you Leavers. You need to get yourselves into gear to make it work. We need to see some of these benefits you’ve been able to see and yet unable to properly articulate since 2016.

So I hope you don’t mind but we’ve taken the liberty of writing a To-Do list for you:

    1. Get Brexit done please. When we say done we mean as promised - so we’ll be looking for trade deals with the EU, Japan, Australia and Canada etc. In fact there’s about 40 deals covering 70 countries that need to be done please. Also a deal with the US that doesn’t involve the NHS or lower food standards or more expensive medications. We want what YOU promised us. That was that we’d be no worse off than when we were an EU member. You need to crack on with that, as this was promised by the end of January. You have seven weeks.

    2. The NHS. We want the cash that was promised please. £350 million per week is about 72,000 nurses so please get recruiting. This is important.

    3. Scotland. OK, so these guys were promised they would remain in the EU if they remained in the UK. They’re pretty !!!!ed off. In fact they’ve voted almost exclusively for the SNP so they might want to leave. Equally you said the UK wouldn’t split so you’ll need to both grant Scotland its independence and keep it as part of the United Kingdom. Good luck squaring that circle.
    NB. This is urgent.

    4. Northern Ireland. Oooookay then. You’ve really !!!!!!ed this one up. There’s a chance they could look to reunify with the Republic now because they didn’t vote to Leave the EU. Regardless you’ve caused instability there where we and they can least afford it. NB. This is also urgent.

    5. The economy. Johnson keeps talking about unleashing the potential of the country. We need to see this soon if possible. We don’t want to see the downturn that “project fear” predicted. We don’t want to be poorer. We don’t want to lose out.

    6. You’ll also need to “bring the country back together”. This might be tricky as a lot of people seem to be really really angry with each other.

That’s as far as we’ve got. Should keep you busy. So go and get all British about things. Roll up your sleeves, pull your socks up, dig deep and deliver what you promised.

Hope we’re wrong and that you can make a success of this but if you can’t then we will forever tell you that we told you so. This was YOUR doing, and you have to make it work for all of us.”

..Now let's get back to money-saving.
  • I haven't come across your diary before but am astonished at the situation with the neighbour spiking your dog and inept solicitors getting court orders and sending out bailiffs for fees already paid. Check out The Law Society's webpage for suggestions on dealing with disputes on fees. The Legal Ombudsman is there as last resort. On a back note I was not aware of how much solicitors charge for EPAs. I did the ones for my mum and will be sorting them for myself and DH but I would be gutted to pay that and they not spot an obvious mistake like an incomplete address.

Re the neighbour do you not have a window which can be locked slightly ajar to allow you ventilation or maybe get a window restrictor fitted? Very scary for you and am amazed the HA cannot do anything about this poor man who obviously needs help. I wonder if he is under the care of social services.

I won't labour the point re election result as it is too depressing. All I can say is very vulnerable people will find the next few years tough and I don't understand what Brexit is about at all. Even here in Cornwall where we get a lot of EU subsidies there is an almost virulent anti EU feeling and when pushed to explain leavers views the ones I have spoken to cannot articulate their reasons for leaving so I now don't discuss it. It is all the more important that those of us who can help personally do so wherever possible. It does sound like you have to take care of yourself too if money is tight.

Good news on the boiler though.

Well said Robin. More magnanimous than I could manage at the moment, but exactly right. They wanted it, now they need to own it.

    I agree with this wholeheartedly.
