Thanks for your replies, Toothsmith. You are right, I won’t be jumping onto any extractions for now. I’ve managed to bring the Endodontist appointment forward to next week instead, so I will wait and see what they say.

Teeth grinding/clenching may be a plausible explanation for the toothache. I was given a night guard last year, but unfortunately found it extremely uncomfortable and prevented me from sleeping so gave up using it. Though tbh I never was truly convinced I had bruxism because it was only mentioned once randomly by a locum dentist I only saw once  and I never experienced any toothache/jaw ache/clicking etc before? (At the time they said something to do with a slight vertical line on another tooth?). What I am doing currently as a preventative measure though is quitting caffeine since it may contribute to any possible stress/tension/anxiety that I read can contribute to teeth clenching at night, if indeed that is the cause. I might also experiment using the night guard again for a few nights, even if it means I get no sleep, I need this toothache gone. Thanks for your help.

A tip I always give for bite guards is for the first few nights, wear it during the evening before you go to bed. Then, when you get into bed and try to go to sleep, it doesn't feel quite so alien in your mouth.

Once your mouth is more used to it, you can just pop it in before you go to bed and sleep perfectly well, but in those initial few nights, it can be hard.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.
