Waitrose as cheap as Tesco / Sainsbury

Options
I have some time on my hands the past 6 months and I that time each time I have done my online shopping I have put the same items in my basket to the nearest equivalent items.

I generally compare Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose but occasionally Morrison’s and also Ocado.

I have found that Waitrose has been better value for money on average. This might be because they never charge a delivery charge and a regular item (the times) is free of charge too.
As I always have my delivery on a Sunday morning this is a saving from the other supermarkets of around £7-8 which generally helps.

Has anyone else found the same?
This is Waitrose essentials range typically compared with other own brand items.

I also do a regular comparison between aldi and Asda and the main supermarkets for mini top up shops but the quality is so poor that the wastage makes it non viable and generally worse value for money.

I don't do internet shopping myself as I prefer to shop in store so can't comment on that. I do use mysupermarket occasionally to compare prices and Waitrose isn't the best value but I'm not adding in the cost of the delivery and newspaper which might make it more cost effective for you.

Do you mean you compare the prices of Aldi and Asda on line or that you go into the stores and do top up shops?

The quality of what is poor exactly?

Likewise I don't internet shop so not exact comparison

I do sometimes find W8rose is cheaper but it does depend on the offers available, I do not have regular weekly buys to compare lists

As always it is worth checking and not dismissing out of hand because of preconceived ideas. Same goes for M & S

We shop in Waitrose a lot. Our little town only has a Waitrose and a small Sainsbury’s.

As regular customers we get money off vouchers frequently. The first lot were spend £20 and get £4 off and the second lot spend £40 and get £8 off. There were 6 of each so that was 12 weeks shopping.

One week we were tracking an artisan cheese but they only had it in individual portions so they couldn’t give us a taste. As it was nearly £6 we left it. A few minutes later a member of staff asked if we would like to have the cheese courtesy of them :D. A couple of weeks ago they had some more artisan cheeses and my OH asked if we could have one free to take home and try it. Not sure who was more surprised, me or him, when they said yes. On another occasion they cut us a big piece of Kaltbach (a lesser known Swiss cheese) and unfortunately the person serving us dropped it. OH said we would still take it with some money off. So they did give us money off, the whole lot.

I don’t know if they have an “offer the customer some things free” budget but we thought it was nice of them. Maybe thought we were poor pensioners who couldn’t normally afford to shop there :rotfl:
  • A few years ago we were impressed with Waitrose as prices seemed to be fairly competitive with Sainsbury and Tesco.

Just in the past few months we have noticed Waitrose getting more expensive and the others seem cheaper. Waitrose have rebranded a lot of own brand in more upmarket looking packaging. I wonder if they have used this to put a few pence on a lot of items.
