Sainsburys Job?

Hi, my friend has applied for a trading manager position at Sainsburys. I’ve said to be very cautious joining a company that isn’t performing very well and is severely (and publicly) cutting back back on staff and cutting costs to compete.
The long and short of it is he’s now worried as he was quite committed to the interview etc before.
Would like to hear opinions on if others would be concerned about joining a company in Sainsburys position at present to discuss with him.

They’re obviously very established and aren’t in an absolute dire situation but could potentially get a lot worse I guess...

Thanks

I would attend the interview and ask questions about the situation when the opportunity arises. As you say, Sainsbury's situation is very much public knowledge, and he is at least showing that he is aware of what is happening. Attending an interview doesn't mean that a job will be offered, and certainly doesn't mean it has to be taken if offered.
  • Sometimes you have to take a risk. I know someone who kind of didn't pay a lot of attention their new role was in shipping - no they don't take notice of the "B" time we're in! Neither did they appreciate one time when they went for a job in claims handling, (that actually people could do it themselves at that moment in time) but it wasn't a wasted experience, in a week when I've come to realise how having lots of different jobs has been good.

It's no longer alright to say this is just my job and I won't touch anything outside my role. ;) it does save nine, if a stitch in time doesn't do.

End of the first week heart racing; off went the trainer and Supervisor for 10 minutes chat, if said person thought they were being let go, they were mistaken. (ability to answer the phone saves the day)

I agree with this, plus if your friend is looking for another job then interview experience could be invaluable.

Id say tell him to go for it.

It can be hard work at times especially Christmas etc or when the store is short staffed.

    Good luck to him.

Have a look what part of the business they are scaling back in. It can be the case that they are scaling back in an unrelated section and, actually, they still have demand in other areas.

That's exactly what they said about Thomas Cook about 14 months ago. That worked out so well....

What has any of that to do with anything?

I agree. There is nothing safe these days. It might, it might not, be the right jump. Nobody can know. Everyone had to make a choice. Nothing is safe.

I think he means people speculated about Thomas Cook too and said it was only some shops in trouble, the online booking system and people who worked in that area would be OK. Unfortunately that want case. So even though there was still demand online, it affected the whole business. Blatchford is then comparing that scenario to your speculation..... I think.
