Which banks has most branches

The problem I have noticed with great interest rate bank accounts is that they sometimes don't have a local branch. Which can be a problem if you get cheques and you want to pay them in via a branch.

So, I got to wondering...

Which bank has the most branches?

And how many of them per region?

This way you can pick a bank that has branches in your area when you are weighing up who to jump to next.

Alliance and Leicester 250 branches and 2500 ATMs
Bank of Scotland 1100 branches (mainly in Scotland and North England)
Barclays 2000 branches and 4000 ATMs
Cooperative 140 branches
Halifax 800 branches
HSBC 1600 branches
LloydsTSB 2000 branches
Natwest 1600 branches 3500 ATMs
Yorkshire Bank 255 branches (mainly northern England and Midlands)

  • I think you can also pay in cheques for Barclays, Co_Op and Alliance & Leicester at the Post Office, which would add a few thousand to each of theirs.

Yes but the bank with the most branches has the most scope for closing them.

You may jump to a bank that then closes all the branches in your area. It happened to me.

I only switched because I was selling on ebay and got a couple of cheques per week. My bank cut it's closing time from 5.00pm to 4.30pm and stopped opening on Saturday mornings. This meant I would not be able to pay in the cheques unless I took and afternoon, or morning off work.

So I switched to the bank across the road which was open until 5.00pm and on Saturday mornings. Two months later it closed and I had to go back to my old bank.

It hardly matters which has the most branches, rather which gives the best service and has the most convenient branch - you only need one!

I rarely visit my bank anyway and do most transactions on line. I get very few cheques, how many do you get?
