Strangely there are, actually, even worse places than Sunderland (I would include Middlesbrough, Stockton, Blackpool etc).
I grew up in Middlesbrough and went to College in London for 7 years. I love both places. If I move back to the UK it will be to N.Yorks, just south of the Boro or somwhere in Teesdale or Weardale. with good access to the train into Kings Cross so I can see West End theatre.
