Removing smoke smell

Options
Morning all

Just bought a lovely leather handbag from charity shop, got it home and it smells quite badly of smoke.

Any tried and tested results, have had a quick look on internet, but thought I’d come straight to old style first for advice 😀

  • Spray the lining with Febreze, and then peg it out on the washing line (on a dry day) for a few hours. I had a leather jacket that was very smelly as it had been worn by a smoker, it took several goes but it worked eventually.

  • I'd try putting it in a plastic bag, chucking lots of Bicarbonate of soda both in the handbag, and around the outside of it, then leaving it for a day or two.

Then you can vacuum it all off, shake it out, pop it out to air if possible. And see where you are. Repeat as necessary.

It would also be worth cleaning the leather with polish or a damp cloth, it might be there are residues on it.

Thanks all, have returned it. I detest smoke smells and thought I would always be able to get a sniff of it, no matter what I did.

I think it might be relatively straightforward to get rid of any nicotine, tar etc in the inner fabric after a few washes, but wonder about the leather part of it. We know that leather hangs onto odours, as demonstrated by the classic leather smell.
