Ghent is a fascinating place to visit with something for everyone and we're offering 5 lucky readers the chance to win a copy of the Rough Guide to Brussels, Bruges, Ghent and Antwerp and a Rough Guide Brussels Map!
Half an hour from Brussels, the many landmarks and fantastic shopping in Ghent are more than enough to occupy the days and as dusk falls Ghent really comes alive with its theatres, concert halls, cinemas, nightclubs and bars.
Most visitors to Ghent start off on St Michael's bridge before making their way to the massive cathedral of St Bavo. The 12th century castle and numerous museums ranging from art and design to psychiatry are also major tourist hot spots.
Ghent is also a fascinating place for foodie shoppers with the old meat market at the Groot Vleeshuis offering many local specialities. Flanders is, of course, famous for chocolates and Ghent offers some of the best but you must also try the mustard, Tierenteyn. Be careful though, it's pretty hot!
Another market to really look out for over the coming months is the Christmas Market which takes place from 7th to 24th December. With wooden huts selling typical Ghent and Flemish Christmas items such as decorations, candles, cards and gifts as well as places to buy food and drink, this is an event not to be missed and the live choir performances and ice rink truly add to the Christmas spirit.
