Tax Refund Company?

in Cutting tax
Hi, would like some advice...just received a mailshot through the post from Usdaw, offering a free tax code assessment from this company, stating that one in three people are due a tax refund, I was wondering if anyone on the forum had taken this offer up? and if so how successful they were; bearing in mind this company takes a 40% slice of all overpaid tax recovered, I personallly think it's a bit much , however if you never had an intention of pursuing a refund in the first place, would it be beneficial to look into it? It may take away all the hassle and not knowing what forms etc to fill in?
Your thoughts would be appreciated...

You just need to contact your local tax office with the relevant details and they will do the same as this company for free.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0

No as it's a waste of money

Yes but do as CIS said below.

The tax office will send you the relevant form if you explain your circumstances. The forms I've had to complete in the past to get tax back have been very easy to complete.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

These firms are a rip-off. All they do is check whether you have been given the fixed rate expense allowance connected with your trade. The fixed rate allowances are agreed between HMRC and the unions but you dont have to be a union member to get the allowance.
The full list of fixed rate allowances is her:
http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/eimanual/EIM32712.htm
If your trade or occupation is listed and you havn't been given the allowance, you simply write to your tax office and make a claim for the past 6 years (or less if your job started within that time). You need to ask for a repayment in the form of a payable order as someone else on these boards simply got an adjustment to their code which is not correct.£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0 -
These firms are unqualified. If you need professional tax advice then start with a member of the Chartered Institute of Taxation ( www.tax.org.uk/ ) as against a mailshot.0
