Hi Piratess - NOBODY is going to say 'should have sent the letter' but we need to get things moving now.
First of all IF Mackenzie Hall do send out 'Field Collectors' (very doubtfull that they will) you need to know that these 'people' have No Powers Whatsoever over than to ask you if you wish to make a payment. Other than for an initial visit, to prove that you actually are the person they need to contact, they should only visit you by prior, mutually agreed, appointment - even then, they have No right of 'ENTRY' to your house.
You have no legal obligation whatsoever to discuss the 'alleged debt' with them and they must leave immediately, when you ask them to.

Now, please, send them the letter.

Rest easier once you've been to the postbox, is my advice. I got a couple of letters and calls from them, but once I sent the National Debtline statute barred letter to them (which is what I presume you're sending? - http://www.nationaldebtline.co.uk/england_wales/debt_advice.php#6 and then the 'over six years' option), haven't heard a thing since.

Thanks, I think, to rog2, who posted the link a while ago. It worked for me. Hopefully it will for you too.
