Help with student living costs abroad
Hi, my son is planning on going to Germany to attend flight school next year. The pilot training is fully funded by the airline but my son has to fund his living costs.
He's been told he CANNOT work whilst he is there to help with costs. I'm not in a financial position to help (various reasons).
Does anyone know of any help/ student loan / grant etc that may be available to him??
Thank you

Is he entitled to a student loan?
Is he able to work now to build up some money behind him?All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
Why can he not work in Germany?
Which nationality is he?
I assume your son already has a degree so has he already had a student loan? The days of airlines recruiting 'A' level students directly from the 6th form as pilot trainees are long gone.
Unfortunately, this course could not really be viewed as higher education or postgraduate study.
Very odd a company would fund his training but not pay some sort of living allowance. Presumably he has entered into some sort of contract to work for the airline after his training is complete. I really don't get this partial funding as it would not be in the airlines best interests if he were to be unable to complete the training because of lack of funds to live or if he were forced to work all hours to have the money to live which could have an adverse effect on his studies. The cost of feeding and lodging him would be very small compared to the investment being made in his training.0 -
Has he worked out how much he will need?
How much of it can he earn/save before he is due to start? Extra job? Things he can sell?0 -
He's not entitled to a student loan as lufthansa is not an approved trainer.
He's a student here doing an access course so is working part-time & saving what he can0 -
Because the course is so intensive, that's why he's not allowed to work.
He'll need approx £25k for the 2 years accommodation, food etc, health insurance, hence why I was wondering if anyone knew of anywhere for help 🤔🤔0 -
Have you spoken directly with lufthansa regarding any additional funding?
I had a friend who was trying to do something similar, he suggested he could get the living costs sorted through some kind of pilot 'student' loans but where he struggled was getting the funding to do the actual training.0 -
Thanks spadoosh I'll try and find somewhere, any pointers??0

Why Lufthansa ?
Did he apply for schools in the UK and Germany and Lufthansa were only ones who accepted him ?
Has your son spoken to the airline re cost living ? They should mention he applies for government assistance, its mentioned under faqs on European Flight Academy.0 -
There is a grant finder on turn2us.
May be worth putting his details in to see if there's anything relevant to his circumstances (although they can heavily oversubscribed.)
Other option is to see if he can defer for a year, to do some serious saving. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Thank you, thank you, thank you DCFC79 😘😘
We didn't realise that would apply to foreign students, we thought it was for German only. We will apply 😁0
