Oh good grief, as if someone was going to get it exactly right! I assumed they would give it to the closest guess. Spent four hours on that!

They were not committed to giving any prize if no one got it correct so they have exceeded expectations by giving
£200 Amazon Voucher & some fischer goodies

I’ve seen this tactic being used by tiny companies before (remember the Rolex watch in ice?) but didn’t expect it from a large multinational..

Only one winner will be selected. We will announce the winner on the 3rd of December.

    ...

In the event that fischer fixings UK Ltd discovers or has reasonable grounds to believe that the same person has made multiple Entries, such person and any Entries made by them shall be disqualified and, if such Entrant has already been selected as a Prize-winner, an alternative Prize-winner will be selected

I suspect they originally intended to award the money to the nearest answer, but didn't get the publicity they expected so went cheap in the end. Oh well, lesson learnt.

update : Thanks 2 everyone who entered the competition. After evaluating all entries no one guessed the winning number. As its Xmas, we have randomly selected someone who entered 2 give them a £200 Amazon Voucher & some fischer goodies. Check your emails 2 see if you are the lucky winner!

Comment left on their facebook : This competition was a farce. No chance anyone was winning it, no information on the actual answer.
Dishonest and speaks volumes about the company!

A competition aimed at the trade, no primary pay to enter route - It simply makes no sense for them giveaway a £50,000 prize as they would not expect a massive increase in product demand and have no way to recoup the costs from paid entries (they could probably have taken insurance against paying the £50k for very little as the odds would have been so long)

They should at least publish the answer tomorrow. I'm curious to see how many zeros I was wrong by :)

What did everyone guess in the end? Mine was 5,536,000,000. Then after a week's thought, suggested a relative apply with 12,288,000,000.
  • I was of a similar order of magnitude, I didn’t think it was clear from the question if it was sales in the UK or globally. I estimated the global amount at around eighty five and a half billion and (a family member guessed) around one and a half billion in the UK. Both stated to eleven and ten sig fig respectively on the entry form. I’m a little peeved at how the contest ended, its annoying / cheeky they didn’t award the main prize, but not rewarding the closest estimate goes against the spirit of the competition and those that spent time researching and estimating. Still I had fun trying, I’m just interested to find out the actual number to see how it compares.
