I am currently looking for a new job and have an interview at Sainsbury's next week. This job will obviously involve a uniform. Now I'm a big guy, I'm 6'2 and to put it bluntly, fat, literally 4XL fat. I am working on my weight but obviously I need a job now. I've always been too scared to apply for jobs where there is a uniform in case they don't have one big enough for me. So I'm just wondering if anyone else here is large and works in a supermarket or any other job requiring a uniform and if you had any issues? Honestly I'm terrified and am seriously thinking about not going out of embarrassment, as daft as that may sound. :(
I think you should be confident.
You can tell a lot about somebody, looking him in the eyes.

I'm sure there's nothing to worry about and they will have uniform that will fit and larger.

If you get the job and have to launder your own uniform, don't forget to claim tax back, it's not a lot but you are entitled to it. https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/reclaim/uniform-tax-refund/

    Good luck.

You would be an ideal employee from my point of view, I'm a titch who struggles to reach the top shelves in supermarkets!
Be confident, stand up straight (imagine there is a piece of string attached to the top of your head pulling you up). That is a trick to make you look slimmer.
Good luck, let us know how you get on.
Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)

Sainsburys will use a standard uniform supplier I'm sure. It may be like us where we have in our buyers office 'some' uniform but you get a form to order your size off and it purchase the following week. If it helps I've had to get staff very large sizes. You might be given money towards getting your own black trousers etc.

We also allow women, with the larger chest, money to purchase a shirt they feel comfortable in. And wear a badge. It's not always about being too large for the clothes, some are just a different shape. A woman eith bigger boobs will struggle to get a fitted shirt then to come in again at her waist.

Don't worry and really well done.
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....
  • As a dumpy lady, I worked in hotels in the early 00's uniform wearing without problem - they always got the bigger size.
T Cook I wore a a flooty longer skirt instead of pencil coz I was a larger lady.

I work with many average sized people in the uniform setting and I notice on the rise with them is b.o so perhaps being different makes you take care of yourself in other ways.

Anyway looking forward to dumping the size 20/22 jacket (from Sainsbo) come a couple of days. (latest place was a supply your own uniform)

It was said a hotel reception only employs glamour puss but I didn't let it put me off.

I've a mate who works for them, he isn't a small guy either and has no issues with his uniform.

Good luck with the interview :)

All very nice and all but that's not an answer to what the OP is asking. He's concerned they won't have a uniform large enough for him.

OP, I used to be 5xl so I know where you're coming from. I wouldn't think it's an issue as it's more common for larger people to need uniforms nowadays I'd say. There's a lad in my local McDonald's who would have made me look skinny in my biggest days and he's got a full uniform so it's certainly possible.

Good luck with the weight loss, I know how hard it is. I'm on Slimming World at the moment and it's been really good for me, 3st lost since April and still going. It's definitely worth joining something like that, it's a great support network and once you've been a couple of weeks you'll really start to get the benefit.

In this day and age, they will have uniform sizes for you.

Back in my day men had to buy their own trousers and shirts ( they were issued with ties and jackets or warehouse jackets and safety shoes ). Not sure what they offer now tbh, seems in my local Sainsbury's their is a complete mix and match of uniforms, its hard to see who's staff
  • Thanks everyone for your replies. I'm going to go to the interview and see what happens. I hate interviews in general, so this one is twice as bad.

The worst they can do is say no, and I'm too embarrassed to set foot in there ever again. :rotfl:
