Tax Code 700L

Options
Hello - wondering if anyone can help.
My husband started a new job and his old tax code up to July was 1021L but his new code seems to be 700L.

Any ideas why?

Plus he has been paid today and we can’t see his payslip yet on line but it’s £430 less than last month.

We are paying back 1 year of child benefit via tax code which might be relevant?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Log onto his personal tax account and that will show how his tax code is made up.

Paying back overpaid child benefit would result on the code being reduced - how much was the benefit to be repaid?

Sounds like his tax code has been lowered to take back the child benefit - but I think he should have received a coding notice fron HMRC informing him of the change of code and letting him know how the calculated. He can check the details online via his personal tax account https://www.gov.uk/personal-tax-account
  • Thank you - I’ll get him to do that. Via the Government Gateway is that how you do it?
It’s just one year of child benefit so around £1000 being paid back.
  • Sorry I should have said this tax code changed when he started his new job so August and September pay. Would it not have been lowered sooner to take back the Child Benefit, from April? We did the on line self assessment.

Also wondering why he’s been paid £430 less this month but we’ve not seen his tax
    code yet.

We didn’t get anything from them in the post at all.

Does he have any taxable benefits in new job, company car for example?

We can only speculate as to the reason, either phone HMRC or check his personal tax account as mentioned above.
  • No nothing like a company car etc. The only think that should change it is child benefit. We will look into it.
Thanks for your help and the links
