Some sickness here and there and then a long period of 5ish weeks.

    Then as I said above.....
In which case they are unlikely to get any further sick pay until the anniversary of when their six weeks ran out.

But it does depend on the company's policy and discretion. Nobody here can give you a definitive answer.

As Comms said, many companies would regard 6 weeks in a year as a lot. Generally companies are more tolerant of a single long period than lots of short ones, assuming there is a good reason and prognosis.

If they decide to stay off sick and just take statutory pay, what happens on 1st Feb 2020, does the company pay kick back in? i.e. are they eligible for another 6 weeks at full pay?

    Thanks!

If they simply decide not to return to work they wouldn't have any entitlement to any form of sickness benefit. For that to be paid they would have to provide medical evidence of being unfit to work.
Company sick pay generally required the employee to be back at work for a period to reset the clock. The employee wouldn't get another period of full pay if they remain off sick, certificated or not.
