Over 60 and still getting spots!

Options
As the title says, I am in my 60's and still get spots. Mainly on my chin but sometimes on my cheeks or nose.

It's really driving me mad now. I have tried so many different products over the years and nothing works.

I seem to have very sensitive skin and almost everything makes it flare up. I am now just cleaning my face with baby lotion, then just warm water. I have given up with moisturiser as they all seem to cause me problems even ones for sensitive skin or hypoallergenic.

I have more or less given up wearing makeup as that makes my skin worse although will wear it occasionally if I am going somewhere and want to look better than I normally do!

I have spoken to my GP about it and he wasn't really interested to be honest.

I really would like to find a solution though and not have spots the whole of my life.

My skin is still pretty greasy although nowhere near as bad as it was when I was younger. The only good thing is I don't have many wrinkles and people always think I am at least 10 years younger than I am.

Can anyone give me some advice please

Maybe have a look at Oil Cleansing? It might suit you if you are used to using a limited product set (and it's great for greasy skin). There is an old thread on here - it's long, but packed with advice and experience.

Given the hypersensitivity and flare-ups it might be papulopustular rosacea not acne vulgaris. Do you have blackheads and whiteheads on all of the affected areas? Or mainly red blisters/ pimples?

Your family doctor should be interested and should be prescribing anti inflammatory cream ('azelaic acid', not the burny kind), but you might consult your pharmacist or the practice nurse in the first instance.

Acne treatments are much too harsh for rosaceans, less is more. Anti inflammatory, tepid water or waterless cleansing, no scrubbing, no massaging, no fragrance ingredients.

Avoid shampoo and haircare stuff getting on your face. Not all baby stuff is gentle enough, it can be fragranced or the wrong pH. If you use perfumes or body sprays try to keep them well away from your face and neck and ears, if they are affected.

Diet can be relevant, central heating or warm fans in the car, sun exposure, stress, oral and dental health or mild infections, alcohol intake ..... Anti inflammatory, non irritating are themes here.

    HTH! :)

Also despite the name Baby Lotion is not actually gentle. It is for wiping babies' bums of crap and pee.

I spent 20 years on various medication from the GP but with no joy. In the end, went to a private dermatologist was was prescribed isotretinoin. Four month course and have now been spot free for 3 years! Just wish I had gone sooner now!

I wish I could post pictures. I’ve spent two decades fighting acne. I thought mine was related to PCOS (and it likely was) but I’ve managed to eradicate it pretty much completely (bar the odd pimple). Previously it was huge, lumpy cysts.

I’ve tried numerous (and I mean numerous) products over the years, including prescription stuff, high end stuff and cheap stuff. If I could get my money back for everything I spent, I’d be rich.

The one thing that has worked for me is cutting out all products with silicone in them. Silicone is in pretty much everything nowadays. It’s often seen as Dimethicone, but can also be called cyclopentasiloxane, trimethicone, cyclohexasiloxane, polydimethylsiloxane, methicone and probably other names too.

Pretty much every makeup product has it in, as well as most moisturisers - even ones used to treat acne.

I’ve been using a makeup range called Lily Lolo which are really good, ethical and priced well too. (I have no affiliation, just that their products are the only things I can use). https://www.lilylolo.co.uk/

I was using Bare Minerals as I thought they were good, but their foundation contains an ingredient called Bismuth Oxychloride, another thing know to exacerbate acne.

I also use Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish to remove makeup. A cleanser by Limelife to clean my face and a light moisturiser by them too.
  • I’m in my 40s and was getting them on my chin and sometimes my cheek. Appreciate I’m a bit younger but I found two things cleared them up, taking a supplement called DIM and taking Zinc daily. Rarely get them since.
