in Cutting tax
Please help! Bit clueless about self assessment. Here is my situation...
I filled in a self assessment for the first time last year, as we receive child benefit and my income went over the threshold. I was told I had to do a self assessment to pay the child benefit back, even though I pay tax through PAYE.
I earn money from two places, my main job and a kind of extra job that pays less. 2017-2018 was an unusual year and I earned a lot more than normal in the extra job, which led to the need for self assessment.
I am still repaying student loans on plan one. My main job deducts that from my salary. (although there isn't that much left to pay, I think about £3000 until it is clear. )
When I did the self assessment, they made me pay student loan payments for my second Job too, although I had never had to do that before. I have read, that you have to pay student loan payments on both jobs if you do self assessment, but if you don't do self assessment, you only have to pay student loan on any individual job that exceed the 18000 threshold.
I think (hope!) still looking for my p60s that my income, after pension contributions will fall just under £50000 this year. That means i won't have to pay back child benefit. Does that mean I don't have to self assess, if I have paid tax through PAYE on both jobs? I am hoping that this is true, as then it will mean that I also do not have to pay student loan on my second job, for which I earn less than 18000.
It would be great if someone could confirm this. If it is true, how do i tell HMRC that i don't need to do a tax return this year? They are sending me emails to remind me to do it. Do you always have to keep doing it once you have done it for the first time.
In summary - my income
Job 1 = 38,000
Pension contributions from job 1 = 3000
Student loan payments taken at source.
Tax paid by PAYE
Job two = 14000
Tax paid by PAYE
Total 52000 minus 3000 pension contributions = 49000 - which is less than the threshold for child benefit.
PAYE paid on both jobs.
Do i need to self assess?
Thanks for reading, thanks for help!
