Yes it is a legit tax code, whether it is the correct tax code for you is a different matter. HMRC have reduced your tax free allowance for some reason; do you know why?
  • No idea.
Guess I'll need to phone the tax office.

if you have not already got a govt gateway account you will need to to have one sooner rather than later

log on, go to your personal tax account and look at the tax code section wherein you will find a copy of every tax code change notification they have sent you. Each notification explains how the code was calculated.

the above assumes you forgot to keep the paper copy they would have sent you ....

as explained on many websites if you look, X means your code is "under review" and may, or may not, be changed again this year.

as a Scottish taxpayer (s) for your to have been reduced from the stadnard £12,500 tax free amount per year to £10,890 means HMRC regard you as having underpaid tax on "something" and they are now collecting that tax through reducing your tax free amount for the rest of this year.
You won't know what the something is until you read the notification...

This happened to my son. His tax code was reduced according to HMRC his tax was underpaid due to earning more than £1000 in interest. He got a letter explaining why his tax code has been reduced.
  • Yeah, forgot about Goverment Gateway.
    Just checked it.
I owe the goverment some money from over a year ago, so it's right after all.
