Hi All,
Not been on here for ages! Been a very very stressful few months. Long story.
Just felt the need to vent about my run-ins with RentSmart. I have a laptop on rent from them through the business. £20 a month with full support and all that gubbins.
Anyhoo...I decided to take on paying for it out of my own bank account (basically cos I couldn't trust RBS to pay them on time) and subsequently rang up and gave them the new details. A month later, no money had left my account so I rang again. Quelle surprise - my details weren't on the system. So I gave them again and asked for a direct debit mandate form.
Filled in the mandate and sent it back with a note attached saying "please ensure that the debit is set up this time."
This week I have received a grand total of 3 letters and 2 harassing phone calls informing me I am in arrears and they have charged me £45 for the pleasure of them not doing their job right in the first place. The customer-focus-challenged person on the phone also had the audacity to say to me that £45 is quite reasonable seeing as I never answer the telephone. Well, excuse me if I don't sit at home all day by the telephone - instead I'm working my backside off!
How do I go about claiming a refund of the £45 seeing as the reason why I've ever fallen into arrears is because they've either lost my bank details or just been downright lazy?
I've even told them to give me their details so that I can set up a standing order - but they didnt like that idea and said I could only pay that way for 3months and then would have to switch to direct debit. Truth is, after having £400 stolen out of my bank account last month, I dont trust them - AT ALL!

Sorry to read that things have been stressful. I hope things sort themselves out soon. If you rang them and gave them the new details the first time round, how about writing to them and asking them to pull the tape of your conversation, so that they can see that the details were given.
This generally gets results - give it a go. If they don't play, threaten them to the FO. For £45 I expect they would cave in.

I'd write to trading standards - there's no reason you should be penalised for them not doing their job.
Possibly write to the Chairman or whatever the company has explaining the problem and your intentions if this isn't fixed. After falling off the gambling wagon (twice): £33,600 (24,000+ 9,600) - Original CC Debt: £7,885.91
