dad going bankrupt

spoke to my dad earlier and he is talking about becoming bankrupt after struggling with debts for years, he is hoping that the council will make him bankrupt and get it over and done with, i suggested that if they wouldn't do it then i will give him the money (which he doesn't have) to declare himself, now, i am a bit worried that if i give him the money i could end up getting dragged into the whole thing in the sense that i can help him out financially if you see what i mean, i don't have the money to pay his debts of as i have just bought my first house,
just wondered if anyone could clear it up for me...... if i have explained myself properly!!!
thanks in advance

Hi Swarby.
Some good advice from DD and Phil.
I'm guessing that as he is hoping the council will make him BR that he has outstanding council tax debts? (i may be wrong though) If so, he coud end up with a prison sentance. Its unlikely the council will make him BR as it costs them over £1700 ( i think)? to make someone BR, where as a prison sentance costs them a lot less!
If he's on a low income or certain benefits he could get a reduction in Br fee's, and will only have to pay the OR's costs, not the court fee.
Don't let him sit around and stew on this. Get advice and get it soon.
Good luck in helping your father out.The first time we said hello, was the first time we said goodbye. As the angels took your tiny hand and flew you to the sky-you forever left us breathless. RIP my beautiful granddaughter

Hi, When I went Br my folks helped me out with the fee's and or deposit.
the court fee is £150 and the deposit for the or is £335.
The or will ask where your father got the money from, he just has to say that you gave him the money as a gift, it's a perfectly acceptable reason and one the or hears on a weekly basis.
Hope that helps and good luck with the future for you and your dad
IanI had debts, my circumstances changed, I tried but couldn't pay them, I dealt with them in the best way I could.........
