Am I self employed or employed?

Hi, I have applied for a new job for a company. On the job description, it has clearly stated I will be self-employed and paid for how many project I do.

However, I have been offer to an interview and if i have become a successful candidates, I will be required to attend to an induction date and about 2 weeks full time residential training course.
Once I am trained, I believe I can arrange my appointments however I like but I am not sure if I am really self-employed or employed with terms?

I am new to this and exploring career options and I understand this role won't be covering any sick day or holiday but want to make sure I am not in any confusion regards to tax and NI, please and thank you.

I am sure the company will explain when I meet them but what questions should I ask in the interview to get more information about this role?

As a general rule if you work for somebody and they pay your wages directly from the company (and this works out to or above minimum wage each pay packet prior to NI, Tax and whatever else deductions) and you get holiday, sick pay and all the other benefits of work then you're employed.

If you have to go and find work and you only get commission for the work you do then you're self employed and you are responsible for your own affairs. It sounds like this is what you have applied for.

Note that self employment when you pay NI contributions these are Class 2, they do not count towards any benefits like New style JSA or your state pension - those are Class 1 payments and you can only "make" them through payslip deductions from a traditional working-for-somebody job. However for state pension you can choose to pay class 3, voluntary NICs but again these payments won't count towards new style JSA should you need it

Check out this link on Gov.uk website. If you answer the questions it should tell you wether you are employed or self employed. Hope this helps as I am no expert

I wouldn't bank on it. Would you like to name the company and people may be better placed to comment?

As to questions to ask in an interview...see how forthcoming they are if you ask whether HMRC have approved the role as genuine self-employment. If they wriggle away from that, it's not a company you want to work for, however good it looks on paper/however desperate you are.

Just for the sake of clarity, I can't comment on the third paragraph, but the first two are about as wrong as you can get.

I never said it was right. I said as a general rule which is as I understand it. I have never said that anything I post on here is gospel. Everybody should take each other's posts with a pinch of salt anyway.
