Christmas Ham

I usually cook my own and was wondering if anyone had any views on where to go for a smoked one. Last few years I have been picking one up in Somerfield or Sainsburys but fancied a change this year.

  • What we prefer is to just buy a regular gammon joint. Then get some wholegrain mustard and some clear honey. Mix the two together and brush over the joint. Cook as usual and serve with the turkey. Delicious!

I baste mine with maple syrup, rum, brown sugar, orange juice and some cloves I think(!) any other others would be welcome though!
  • hi

we always go for smoked as well!! - love the flavour

both us and MiL get our gammon joints from local chain of butchers

and it is always delicious and good value.
Worth a try if you are in Kent or can get to Kent to buy you rmeat.
  • How about your local butchers? I always find the meat is brilliant from mine.

If not Asda do a very good range, I think its called Applewood or Oakwood, something like that. We bung it in the slow cooker and its bootiful :)
  • Thanks guys - never thought of the butchers!! - Doh!!! Last year, I cooked mine in full sugar coke and then basted with brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and maple syrup. Sounds weird but came ouut really nice - apparently a very American thing to do.
  • Is it best to roast the ham if i was to paste in mustard and honey as i have done a plain one before but in the steamer.

Also how long will it need to roast for?

    Thank you

    Butchers for me every time.

And then use Nigella's recipe cooking it in coke.

I get a gammon corner from a local farm shop - odd shape but great taste and cheaper! This year I am planning to try Nigella's recipe which she cooks it in cranberry juice, previously have used her recipe for cooking it in coke which is excellent!
