28/11 luxurious long weekend in Portugal

1. ITUNOCELUM

2. GLANNOVENTA

Thanks to Northernstar (see thread) got there

sorry my brain has gone into shutdown but this is what I've got so far:

John Wilkinson born 1728 built the first iron hulled barge in 1787 and he was born in Clifton, Cumbria

Cartmel has the racecourse and the priory

nearby Holker Hall had a fire in 1871

Bramwell Bronte was a tutor in 1840 at Broughton in Furness (hot place = furnace)

(Emma Hart sat 14 times for George Romney who did train at Kendal)

The station is at Ravenglass

George Romney was borm in Dalton in Furness and was sent to school at Dendron which is near Gleaston

Gleaston is, I think, the hamlet with the 14th century castle.

got one of the answers but need help with the other:

    WILKINSON roman II = i ordinary 3 = L
    CARTMEL roman I + V = c, m ordinary 2 = A
    HOLKER HALL roman II = o ordinary 2,8 = O, A

    GLEASTON roman VI = t ordinary 1, 8= G, N
    DENDRON roman III = n ordinary 3,7 = N, N
    ROMNEY roman V = e ordinary 5 = E

    BROUGHTON IN FURNESS roman IV , XIII = u, u ordinary 7 = T
    RAVENGLASS roman VII = l ordinary 3 = V

rearange the ordinary letters - LAOAGNNNETV and you get GLANNOVENTA the roman fort at Ravenglass, which is the answer to 2.

"Rearrange your collected Roman letters to produce the fort’s correct name. Earn a bonus prize by rearranging your other letters to produce the name by which it was, until recently, incorrectly known."

can anyone rearrange the roman list to make the new, correct name?

  • I can only find this [SIZE=-1]The Roman name of Ravenglass is now believed to be Itunocelum rather than Glannoventa, the majority of the letters are there, think that there is a U and L missing, will have to go and have another look.

  • RAVENGLASS roman VII = a ordinary 3 = V

Think the A should be an L
  • BROUGHTON IN FURNESS roman IV , XIII = h, o ordinary 7 = T

Think the H should be U,

not 100% as I thought IV was 4

yep, thanks for that and IV is 4 not 6 - so I have changed it and with Broughton there's a "u" not a "h" and XIII is 13 not 8 and is also a "u", Thanks very much

    Good luck, everyone
