Dental help for my horrible smile

Hi all
Due to really bad dental hygiene during depression etc my teeth are now in a vile state, in fact most of the top ones are gone. I was put on a really long waiting list at the dental hospital (Manchester) but having enquired recently how long I'd be on it I was told I was not 'chosen'.

Now I am looking for somewhere to go who can extract the remaining teeth and fit dentures, I've looked at places where they do 'smile makeovers' but I'm just wondering if they are good as I know they're not cheap and being on a tight budget I'm looking for best payment plans and prices.

If anyone has any advice as these teeth have made me lose my confidence and pushing me back depression wise :(

Thanks in advance

This is quite a straightforward procedure. The first denture you get can only be considered temporary anyway, as the healing of the bone after the teeth have been taken out will mean that a first set of dentures won't be a good fit for very long, and will need replacing.

So you could go anywhere to get that stage done. You don't need anywhere particularly 'specialised' - any high street dentist, private or NHS will be able to take care of you. Just go somewhere close.

When it comes to the more permanent set, once the healing has taken place, you may well have come to like and trust the dentist who saw you through the initial stages, and go back to them for a better denture. It will be up to you.

You may find that the problem isn't as bad as you fear, and teeth can be saved - but any way up - first thing is just to find an ordinary local dentist and book in for an initial check-up.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.
  • Thank you so much for that, having been a long time lurker I have seen your posts and was hoping you would advise me too, unfortunately I don't think the remaining teeth can be saved as they are very loose.

Ok - well still - just get to a nearby dentist and get some advice and treatment options there.

    Good luck with it.:)

  • If you say an area / county members might be able say who are ok and who to avoid!

As someone who is now getting a near complete top plate made after 20 years of more and more teeth being added to an existing plate, my advice is to find a dentist that you can build a good relationship up with

I went last week for a fitting of my plate and told him ( dentist) to take them away and start again cos they were bloody horrible :rotfl:

Apparently its because my one remaining front tooth protrudes so the new teeth are matching those ( move over Janet Street Porter )

So I get another fitting next week, if Im still not happy I will be asking for this tooth to be removed and I think my dentist may take. this on board seeing as I have worn dentures for so long. Hes more concerned that if he removes that tooth, Ive only got my wisdom teeth to help keep the falsies in place. The more teeth you have, the easier it is to fit dentures

All dentist want to do is to give you the best oral care they can within the limitations of your own oral care and what they and you can afford ( NHS V Private )

The Dentists of Didsbury and Parkfield Dental practice are two personal recommendations. At least try and talk to them about your options. Good luck :)

With regards finding a dentist you can build a good relationship with, try and find one a good few years younger than yourself who hopefully will still be working into your old age.
