Balance transfer from wife's credit card

Options
Hi Everyone, my wife has about £10,000 on her credit card, which is a bit hefty and a bit unfair given that we put the car on it! I'd like to take £5000 of it to a 0% card for balance transfers. Would I be allowed to do this, or would the bank not let me take a debt that is in someone else's name? If I can take on 50% it would be healthier distribution of the debts, I think. Some pointers would be gratefully received.

  • Most cards will allow it.

Best to do it online, rather than over the phone. If you';e asked about the name of the card, be honest.
  • Thanks zx81 I really appreciate it

  • He ZX81, just to clarify, this would not be illegal would it? I am not looking to game anything, I just want to know if a bank would allow it. I certainly don't want to risk doing anything illegal.

  • Not illegal. It could technically breach the terms of the card (depending on what they say), but the risks and any subsequent action are very small.

You wouldn't get more than 10 years. :)

    No, you'll be fine.
  • Thanks again, ZX81. 10 years would be about right for getting away from the wife and kids and having some rest. It's been too long without any proper sleep so I'm all in ;-)

  • I've done it before, I transferred my husbands debt from Capital One to a 0% Sainsburys card in my name

Did it online, they just asked for the long card number I wanted to transfer from

We did this recently - I just had to add my partner as a second card holder on my account to do the transfer.

I think Tesco specifically prohibit it but most are OK. If you don't put the details for the transfer in at application, get the card, and do the transfer online then it usually just asks for the long card number.
