Till discrepancy

Hi,am looking for some advice. My daughter works for a well known high street name, she had been ill recently and had to take some time off work. When she returned, her manager was hinting that this may not be the job for her and she should leave until she felt stronger and more able for work. She loves her job and in an area of quite high unemployment she is very reluctant to leave. At the end of day yesterday, her supervisor told her her till was down over £40. This is quite a large amount and she has no idea what has happened. She is extremely worried she is going to be fired, that the supervisor and manager are behind this to try and force her out. I am finding this all very hard to believe and trying to reassure her that there will be an explanation for it. There is cctv above the tills and I know she wouldn't take it,it is not in her nature. She had the day off today anyway and is back in tomorrow. Any advice would be gratefully received.
Thank you.

  • I'm not saying this is the case but it's not always a case of stealing from the till ....she made have just made mistakes in giving too much change.

What is the stores policy on till discrepancies?

Years ago, when I worked for a large supermarket, I was called in to explain a £10 shortage on my till

    I couldn't

    I accepted a verbal warning

A week later the warning was revoked as the £10 had been found, in the days before cards and it was cash and cheques, one note had worked its way out the top and stuck in the spring at the back of the drawer

As you say, there is CCTV above the tills. Your daughter is adamant she hasn't done anything wrong, and believe me, as a till operator, you do tend to have an idea when you may have cocked up, even if you weren't aware at the time.

Im sure there will be an investigation, that has to take due course. She will be questioned. All she can do is tell the truth

The two incidents are probably not connected at all
  • Thank you. She is absolutely bricking it. She told me her supervisor had been using her till on and off, she does know there will be an investigation, they were going to recount everything this morning, her day off, she was not called in and nobody searched her when she was going home the previous evening. We'll see what the day brings, thanks.

She can only really go with the flow. It wouldnt progress past a warning for a first incident.

That said, I would forget your insinuation that the managers are trying to frame her.

If she's not in a union then joining now would be sensible.

Sharing tills? With the cash not changed between operators? That should work in her favour, I'd say. A mistake could be either of them.

It might be worth getting your daughter to find out what the retailer’s stance is around sharing tills if there is more than one on the premises and if her supervisor used the till with your daughter still signed on.

I worked in a convenience store for a few months and we had to do a till check every time we signed off for reasons above.
