Loan for Housewife? (Not as bad as it sounds!)

HI, just wondering if anyone could advise me please.

To set the scene:
I am currently a housewife and mother (aka 'unemployed' in the financial world it seems!). I receive child benefit and child tax credit into my bank account, and my husband, who earns a good wage, gives me housekeeping money. I have a good credit history, no credit cards (did have) and one loan with NOrthern Rock, for less than five grand, taken out whilst I was still in employment. I have no problems paying this myself, and am quite happy to let it run it's course.

However:

I am a bit concerned with all this Northern Rock business, and am considering changing my loan, depending on if I can get a decent deal, also increasing the payments and decreasing the loan time. My husband does not want to do a joint loan (fair enough, it was mine whilst I was working, so not his problem). Before I start applying, are there any companies you know of who would consider a housewife and offer decent deals?

Thanks

  • Hi there

Don't know many high street lenders who would do this, specially at the mo, I know of 2 big companies (prime lenders) who have stopped doing personal loans altogether
If it was me I would continue paying NR, dep on rate you've got (you didn't say when you took out and what rates were at that time) I don't think you would find a hugely better deal at the moment. If you want to change companies, only place who I can think of that might consider are A&L and their rates tend to be down the cheapest end in comparison to whats out there
Hope this helps, but I think if it was me I stay as you are
