Male fashion advice for wedding evening do please.

I have been invited to a wedding evening do with my 12 year old son by a work colleague. The venue is a Golf club so looks to be quite upmarket. I asked the lady who is getting married what the dress code was & she said trousers & shirt & no jeans. I have to admit that I do not normally get invited to places like this so I have no idea what type of trousers & shirt I should wear. Also, what type of shoes should I wear. Is it just a case of a normal pair of trousers & plain dress shirt. Should it be a plain shirt or could I get away with a checked design? I work in an office so my normal attire is black trousers, plain white shirt & brown dress shoes. Is it just a case of wearing similar to this? Could anyone post a link to any pictures. Also, what about my Son? Would it just be similar to me? Sorry but I haven't got a clue
