Is it possible to make any worthwhile money doing surveys?

Options
So, my other half is currently unemployed, and looking for some part time work - only 10 - 12 hours per week as he is also my carer.

Of course the job websites also show "work from home" roles, i.e. doing surveys.

I can't see him being impressed if I suggest this, but just so I know, is it possible to make more than £5 per week doing this?
I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say. :)

  • I do surveys for pocket money, I earn survey money and convert them to supermarket vouchers.

Sometimes you have a run of qualifying for all surveys and can build the money up, other times there are no surveys for a while.

I have just added up my money for the last seven days and I have earned over £6, but I have spent a few hours doing them.

I personally wouldn't rely on it for needing guaranteed money, but it's fine for a little boost once I reach the amount required to swap it for a voucher; minimum swap is £10.50 for £10 voucher.

Others may suggest more dependable ones!

Prolific isn't bad as they pay the equivalent of mminimum wage for the time spent but you have to spot the surveys as they come up and they tend to vanish in seconds.
Is he claiming anything as it could potentially affect that?
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
  • not worth it, pick a skill and ply your trade on freelancer sites if you want spare cash on the side. Get an AAT qualification and you can do small ltd company tax returns.

You can also learn programming, graphic design etc.
  • A few quid pocket money when you have a spare half an hour here and there. Don't look for more than that and you will be happy with the results.

They're okay for a bit of pocket money, if you've got nothing better to do.

I only do enough for about £5 a month...I mainly treat myself to new Gel Manicure colours!!
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)

I suppose you could just about manage £5 a week on surveys, but most of them are very boring to do, and you can waste a lot of time answering pre-survey qualification questions, only to be told you don't qualify.
  • Maybe it’s luck, maybe it’s demographics, maybe it’s a mixture, but if you read the Qmee thread, some people make a lot more than £5 a week.

I average at about £75 a month on Qmee.

That’s a considerable amount extra but obviously not enough to cover a full time job.
  • I've been doing surveys on Qmee, Prolific and Populus for a couple of months now - and to echo other comments, think of it more like pocket money. Don't get me wrong, I've done pretty well out of them (Prolific not so much this month) but it's not something I'd recommend as a primary source of income.

It beats sitting there watching junk on TV and browsing the internet of an evening, but beyond that - I'm not sure I'd pin my financial hopes on it.

In terms of making over £5 per week, I would suggest that's very doable (on a good Friday evening I can clear more than that, with a fair bit of luck and a few decent surveys).

I think the most I've managed is £30 in a month when i wasn't working.
  • I earn around £100 per month on average with online surveys, however I am registered with about 20 companies. Some are much better than others and I find I can be repeating the same survey for more than one company.
I would say that I spend around an hour per day working on them. That means the average pay per hour is about £3.40 so it does not compare with even a minimum wage job. (Due to family commitments I am limited to when I can leave the house and we are not entitled to any benefits so this really is a need rather than a voluntary pastime).
