DMP affecting job selection!?

Hi. I’m on a dmp. I have applied for a civil nurse job within the ministry of defence. I would be a band 5 practice nurse. I would still be a civil. I have heard that they perform a full military background check and I am worried my debt will affect my chance of getting the job. Do you know if this happens? Thank you
TOTAL DEBT JUNE 2019: £38,233.87 Aiming debt free mid 2023. All bad debt written off / paid by January 2023. No missed payments in 2023. Only one active credit card to pay off! I DID IT 🎉

  • No it won't., unless you have CCJs. You won't be able to go bankrupt, get an IVA or a DRO though. Stop worrying and enjoy your new job! :)
  • How do you know? Personal experience?

Is it a full MOD SC Clearance Check? If it is then yes it might affect your chances. Any thing which shows financial difficulty will be looked at. To quote the official guidelines

if you or your partner have previously been or are currently in serious financial difficulty, or show signs of financial irresponsibility, you could be vulnerable to pressure or bribery
  • Yeah I think it’s a full one. I’m not in SERIOUS financial problems. Serious would be if I wasn’t paying. I’m just using a dmp hence showing responsibility for paying my debts i think??

I cannot be certain, but I thought the MoD, from an employment perspective, had problems employing candidates with either a history of bankruptcy or IVAs. I thought a DMP was okay as it is just an informal arrangement to pay. Could be wrong though...

In fact, I've just found a policy document from the Royal Navy. Please have a read of paragraph 0601 of the document linked below:

I work within the voluntary sector, supporting vulnerable people to rebuild their lives.

    I love my job

  • Thank you. My debt repayment is not 50% of my income I hope I’ll be ok :)
